Cambridge is one Britains most beautiful cities and is an excellent base for those who want to live in an attractive, lively environment. As one of Britains major seats of learning with a long and distinguished history, the city is a very popular place for sight seeing, shopping, eating, or for a night out at the theatre or cinema. However, Cambridge is more than a city of leisure. Long known for its scientific and research excellence, the university is closely associated with the areas leading industries, especially electronics, biotechnology, instruments and software. Burgeoning science and business parks are located to the north of the city. Despite recent turbulence in world economies and high tech industries, Cambridge continues to exude a sense of economic confidence and well-being.

Cambridge is 60 miles north of London and less than an hour from London by the M11. The population of roughly 108,000 has stabilised during the last decade but pressure on housing in the city remains and a new settlement at Cambourne, 7 miles to the west, is part complete and is still being developed. Other proposals such as a new town development to the east of the city are also planned as part of the Councils strategy of managed, limited and sustainable growth.

In the last 25 years, Cambridge has undergone a dramatic transformation from a pleasant, sleepy, university market town to a buoyant centre of knowledge based and high-tech industry with a labour force of approximately 82,880, representing a quarter of all jobs in Cambridgeshire. As well as the high-tech sector, the city offers employment opportunities in education, local government (two district councils and the county council are based in the city), health, media and publishing, and a growing retail sector, set to benefit from the Grand Arcade scheme based around an extended John Lewis store.
