			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A report released by the <a title="Office for National Statistics" href="http://www.statistics.gov.uk/hub/index.html">Office for National Statistics</a> has shown that last year 131 million working days were lost in the UK due to sickness or injury.</p>
<p>The largest number of sick days, 34.4 million in total, were claimed due to musculoskeletal problems. The second most common reason for absences were minor illnesses and the forth was stress, depression or anxiety, which accounted for 13.1 million days.</p>
<p>Women are the worst offenders for taking sick days overall. In 2011 women lost an average of 2.3% of their working hours to sickness while men in comparison only lost 2.5%.</p>
<p>It is interesting that the report analysis takes into account not only illness but also the level of motivation and pressure which staff feel to go to work, despite illness, in different employment sectors and scenarios.</p>
<p>Private sector workers are far less likely to take sickies than those in the public sector with 1.6 per cent of hours lost by private sector workers compared to a substantially greater 2.6 per cent by those in the public. Working environments where people were more likely to contract minor illnesses, as well as the higher percentage of women working within the public sector, were highlighted as two major reasons for the difference in these figures.</p>
<p>However the report also underlined that figures only reflected someone as being sick if they were working less hours than the number which they had been contracted for. Therefore the numbers did take into account hours that had afterwards been made up, something which is more likely to have been possible for those working in the private rather than public sector. It was also pointed out that those in the private sector may feel under more pressure to make up for lost hours if working within smaller organisations, which are more common in private than public sectors, and which lose less sick days per year than medium to large sized businesses. Those in the private sector may also face unpaid sick leave more commonly than those in the public.</p>
<p>Self-employed workers were found to have the least number of working hours lost overall. During 2011 the self-employed lost just 1.2 per cent of working hours to sickness. The reasons behind this would seem fairly straight forward; self-employed people do not benefit from the advantage of sick-leave cover and therefore have the highest motivation to work or lose out financially.</p>
<p>Finally the report looked at the geographical implications of sick leave to find that workers in the Capital take less days off due to illness than those elsewhere in the country. London employs workers from a younger age group, has a greater number of self-employed people and more private sector workers than other areas of the UK. As a result London had the lowest sick day figures with workers losing on average 1.3 per cent of hours whereas those in the North East and Wales lost the greatest amount, averaging 2.5 per cent.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p style="text-align: justify;">The Warrington Annual Property Review took place last week and, despite the continued economic doom and gloom, reports revealed that commercial office space interest in <a title="Warrington Serviced Offices" href="http://www.easyoffices.com/serviced-offices/uk/warrington">Warrington</a> remains steady.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Sallie Maskrey of Portal Business Centres Ltd was among those at the well-attended review event. I asked Sallie to tell me a bit about what she had been able to take away from the day and whether the data had revealed many positives about the state of Warrington&#8217;s current market.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Sallie commented: “The Warrington Property Review has been running for 14 years and during that time Warrington has remained resilient to the worst effects of the economic downturns with 2011 being no exception.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Warrington is ranked in the top 8 locations for both earnings and people in employment  and  moved up to 7th in terms of its employment rate. It was 8th in terms of high earnings. It also has the 7th highest proportion of private sector employment, one of the factors that have helped insulate Warrington from the public sector spending cuts.”</p>

I asked Sallie if she had seen any change in sales trends during the recession. <p style="text-align: justify;">Figures from the Warrington Annual Property Review, prepared by property agency BE Group, show that office space take up in the town during 2011 was twice that of 2010. The final take up figure for last year was 17,500 sq metres, which, although well below the 10 year average, has revealed a positive trend during tough economic times. Sallie concluded: “Warrington as a location continues to be popular with businesses as has been reflected by the property review.”</p>

This will be Orega&#8217;s second office venture in the Capital after seeing ongoing success with its first-ever central London offering at <a title="High Holborn Serviced Offices" href="http://www.easyoffices.com/serviced-offices/uk/london/london/high-holborn/21653">16 High Holborn</a>.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">In preparation for the games, MWB has hosted a number of seminars to help educate local businesses at several of the operator&#8217;s business centres in <a title="Houndsditch Serviced Offices" href="http://www.easyoffices.com/serviced-offices/uk/houndsditch">Houndsditch</a>, <a title="Paddington Serviced Offices" href="http://www.easyoffices.com/serviced-offices/uk/london/london-west-end/paddington">Paddington</a>, <a title="Liverpool Street Serviced Offices" href="http://www.easyoffices.com/serviced-offices/uk/london/london-city/liverpool-street">Liverpool Street</a> and <a title="Cannon Street Serviced Offices" href="http://www.easyoffices.com/serviced-offices/uk/london/london-city/cannon-street">Cannon Street</a>. Keynote speakers at the events have included Nicky Ward, London 2012 Travel Advice to Business Team Leader and Duncan Mackay, Editor of insidethegames.biz.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Following on from the advice given at the seminars, MWB has also published an “Olympic Survival Guide”, now available on the operator&#8217;s website, for London businesses facing the up-and-coming arrival of the games. The guide gives advice on how businesses can be best prepared for travel disruption while a separate document provides guidance on contingency planning.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The survival guide states that it is “critical” that London businesses should get prepared for the Olympics and recommends the formation of an in-house games committee. A people plan should be devised together with careful consideration of travel logistics for staff getting to and from the centre of London.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Furthermore the guide suggests that businesses consider alternative solutions for staff working during the Olympic period by introducing flexible working hours or allowing staff to work from home. A warning is also given about the effect that the games may have on Internet Service Providers (ISPs) around the London area, with an overload leading to potential internet line drop outs as well as data caps over the summer period.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">MWB is also using its business centre portfolio to provide accommodation for the world media.
