Office description
This space was originally designed by Lloyd Tayler and Alfred Dunn as the headquarters of the Commercial bank of Australia. Lloyd Tayler had previously designed the Head Office for the National Bank on Collins Street and Parliament House in Adelaide. Alfred Dunn, who was much younger than Tayler, had recently competed the great Wesleyan Church in Hawthorn. The Commercial Bank of Australia was established in 1866 and from that date the Bank’s headquarters was located at this site. In 1892 it became the largest of the associated banks in Victoria. Later in 1981 the Commercial Bank of Australia and the Bank of New South Wales merged to become Westpac Banking Corporation. The famous Dome chamber and its vaulted entrance certainly appealed to the Banks Directors as it was the largest and most grand bank in Melbourne. Today the building is no longer a bank, but is home to a successful and thriving business hub and is a popular venue for weddings.
