Charity organisation Autism Plus will be moving from its current headquarters in Tinsley to a new location at the landmark Exchange Brewery building in central Sheffield.

The 19th century building has undergone substantial refurbishment to provide a variety of modern services. The newly created, multi-functioning facility includes a drama studio, IT resources and support services specifically created for use by those supported by the charity. The move will allow Autism Plus to provide an enhanced range of services to adults within the Yorkshire region who have autism spectrum conditions (ASC), learning disabilities and mental health difficulties.

The 24,000 sq ft deal was brokered by the Sheffield office of commercial agent Knight Frank who acted on behalf of developers Wilson Bowden. The building has been purchased by The Adsetts Partnership (TAP), a not for profit company created to provide an umbrella for voluntary sector organisations delivering services to those with disabilities or who are experiencing disadvantage.

The Exchange Brewery is part of the Riverside Exchange area located on Lady’s Bridge, the oldest bridge across the River Don, and close to the famous, 150-year-old, Wicker Arches.

Peter Whiteley, partner at Knight Frank, commented: “This is an exciting refurbishment of an atmospheric old building which will provide modern offices and work space for Autism Plus and its service users. Thanks to the Tennant Brothers establishing a brewery in the area in the 1800s, the Riverside Exchange is strongly associated with Sheffield’s brewing heritage. Autism Plus buying the building will see it brought back into valuable use and contributing to the continuing development of the neighbourhood.”

Philip Bartey, Autism Plus group chief executive, said: “Our vision for the Exchange Brewery is to create a base that will mean we are able to deliver a service that is truly responsive to the needs of people who have ASD or other learning difficulties and who face multiple barriers to employment. Autism Plus is this year celebrating its 25th anniversary, so it seems fitting that we are entering an exciting new stage in a new facility that will allow us to provide vital additional support.”
