Wimbledon SW19 – more than just Tennis……….
Mention ‘Wimbledon’ to anyone and for the next two weeks, the first thing to mind would be the tennis, and if a Brit, namely Andy Murray, can finally win the tournament. To others the name might conjure up images of The Wombles, a children’s TV programme form the mid 70’s whose characters lived in nearby Wimbledon Common.
There is much more to Wimbledon that just cultural or sporting references though, the area is split into two distinct areas – the ‘village’ and the ‘town’, both with their own nuances. The High Street is an original part of the medieval village whereas the town is an integral part of the modern development that started with the building of the railway station in 1838.
Wimbledon is located in the south west of London in the London Borough of Merton, within Greater London. The town is just south of Wandsworth, east of Kingston, west of Mitcham and north of Sutton. It has its own Rail and Tube Station with access to the District Line into London and over ground routes that terminate at London Waterloo.
