Whether it\u2019s starting work later to take children to school in the morning, working part-time for health reasons, hybrid working due to a long commute, or a multitude of other reasons, one of the biggest benefits to employees is that it offers them a better work-life balance. A study by Aviva found that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aviva.co.uk\/adviser\/documents\/view\/workinglivesreport2017.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">63% of employees are more likely to stay with an employer who offers flexible working<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and if you\u2019re seeking to hire new talent, then it also opens up a wider pool of candidates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flexible working is also good news for employers looking to reduce absence rates. With increased work-life balance, employees can better manage their workload, particularly if they have disabilities, long-term health conditions or mental health conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, for employers, flexible working can lead to reduced overheads. If <a href=\"https:\/\/www.easyoffices.com\/blog\/business-advice-and-news\/how-much-office-space-you-need\">you have fewer staff members in the office full time, you may need less office space<\/a>. You could move to a smaller <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.easyoffices.com\/uk\/shared-office\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shared office<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or even a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.easyoffices.com\/uk\/co-working-space\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">co-working space<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 perfect for start-ups and growing businesses.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the process for flexible working?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All employees have the right to request a flexible working plan. What is a flexible working plan? It\u2019s the agreement between an employee and their employer that sets out the details of their arrangement, whether it\u2019s working set days every week or an annualised contract.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/flexible-working\/applying-for-flexible-working\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UK government<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, any employee can make a \u2018statutory application\u2019 if they\u2019ve worked continuously for the same employer for the last 16 weeks. This must be done in writing, and the following steps should be followed:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The employee writes to their employer, stating that they\u2019re making a statutory request and outlining their requirements for work hours. They must also state how they think it could impact the business. If they\u2019re requesting every Wednesday off, for example, they must show how the potential impact of this could be managed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The employer must respond within three months. If they agree with the request, they should write to the employee outlining the agreed changes and a start date for the new arrangement. They must also update the employee\u2019s contract to reflect the changed circumstances.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If someone has worked in a role for less than 26 weeks, they may make a \u2018non-statutory request\u2019. There aren\u2019t any set rules and regulations about this, but it\u2019s recommended that such requests are also made in writing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flexible work arrangements can have a huge positive impact on both employees and employers.
