If so, you need to stop immediately. <em>(You\u2019re also not alone)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ability to switch off has been getting more complicated, and the work-from-home trend hasn\u2019t helped. In the UK, a staggering <a href=\"https:\/\/yougov.co.uk\/topics\/economy\/articles-reports\/2018\/08\/15\/majority-employees-check-work-emails-while-holiday\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">60%<\/a> of people check work emails on holiday, and the same goes for <a href=\"https:\/\/asana.com\/resources\/anatomy-of-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">63%<\/a> of people in the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly, around 8 in 10 people believe their managers wouldn\u2019t actually expect them to, suggesting the pressure to check in while on holiday is self-imposed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-color wp-block-heading\" style=\"color:#ff5659\"><strong>The problem of presenteeism and leaveism<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Presenteeism, or sickness presence as it\u2019s known, was a big problem a few years ago, which forced companies to address team members feeling the need to show up for work despite feeling ill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cipd.co.uk\/Images\/health-wellbeing-work-report-2022_tcm18-108440.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">75%<\/a> of managers admit to actively asking people to take time off when sick, and 45% of leaders say they now stay off to role model the behaviour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More managers are being given the training to spot the warning signs of presenteeism, but while we\u2019ve been getting that under control this year, a more prevalent work behaviour has been on the rise: leaveism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leaveism is when we use annual leave to catch up on work; many people are guilty of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A massive 67% of organisations observed leaveism among teams in 2022, with many working on holiday and outside contracted hours to handle workloads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1128\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.easyoffices.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Leaveism-at-work-Easy-Offices.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16678\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.easyoffices.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Leaveism-at-work-Easy-Offices.jpg 1128w, https:\/\/www.easyoffices.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Leaveism-at-work-Easy-Offices-560x335.jpg 560w, https:\/\/www.easyoffices.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Leaveism-at-work-Easy-Offices-768x460.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.easyoffices.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Leaveism-at-work-Easy-Offices-595x356.jpg 595w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1128px) 100vw, 1128px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-color wp-block-heading\" style=\"color:#ff5659\"><strong>The work-life balance blur<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Data from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.textanywhere.com\/resources\/blog\/sms-marketing\/screen-habits-in-the-uk-how-attached-are-we-to-our-screens-in-and-out-of-the-workplace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TextAnywhere<\/a> shows that employees in the UK struggle to maintain a balance when it comes to leaving work at work. For most, checking emails on personal phones has become the norm, and the line between work and life has become blurred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly, one Asana study shows Millennials are the biggest offenders when it comes to checking emails outside of working hours. One of the top wellness travel trends for 2023 is set to be a digital detox holiday, where experts are on hand to help people curb addictions to tech.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Set your own digital detox challenge on annual leave by reducing time spent online. An app like Flipd can help you lock social channels and chats for a specified amount of time so you can focus on other things.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Turn off notifications<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The importance of turning off notifications can\u2019t be stressed enough. Notifications from work outside working hours can trigger anxiety. <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/full\/10.1177\/0894439319858008\">Research<\/a> links constant interruptions from Smartphone notifications with depression and severe anxiety.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Disable work notifications while on leave. Whether that means deleting Zoom or Microsoft Teams from your personal phone, or muting all your channels on your work laptop, make sure you do it before your leave begins. \u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Plan in advance<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Taking leave is less stressful when your out-of-office is sorted and your handover has been done.<strong> \u00a0<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Managing expectations internally and externally is key, so ensure you communicate your handover details in advance.
