The Beehive was vacated in August last year after former occupier GB Airways was sold to easyJet. The Bland Group, which had owned GB Airways, bought The Beehive from BAA in 2001.
Dating from 1936, The Beehive was the world’s first circular airport passenger terminal and is grade II listed. It took five months to gain planning consent to covert the building into serviced office space and the Bland Group has invested ~1.2m in a complete refurbishment.
Since its official launch in July 2009 by flexible office space operator Orega The Beehive has gone from strength to strength. Flourishing thanks to its sought-after business position right next to the international airport, not only has the historic centre attracted local and international companies but it has also caught the attention of the BBC!
The iconic art deco property represents a significant part of British aviation history and is now to feature in a new BBC4 programme on aviation in the 1930s. Filming on site will take place very shortly and the programme is due to begin broadcasting this autumn.
Offering a total of 22,000 sq ft of serviced office space the two-storey building now offers flexible, modern offices with leading-edge IT and telecoms technology, contemporary interior styling, fully equipped conference and meeting rooms, and 128 parking spaces. It also features a dynamic interior and exterior lighting system which changes the colour of the building throughout the day and evening.
Several businesses have already signed up for flexible office space at the Gatwick centre amongst them global IT and business services company Logica, education technology firm It’s Learning and marine geophysical company Polarcus. This month’s newest addition is company Wensum which provides corporate uniforms to the travel, leisure and retail sectors including airlines. With plans to move in this month, Wensum has taken nine workstations at the centre, creating a new Gatwick headquarters. Additionally G&H Engineering has also signed up at the business centre. A structural steelwork company, G&H has been involved with projects at Gatwick for many years and wanted self-contained, high-quality offices nearby.
After announcing the acquisition of The Beehive Paul Finch, joint MD of Orega, commented: “This exceptional landmark building perfectly fits with our philosophy of providing an exciting and innovative working environment, and our involvement with The Beehive will allow a number of businesses to share in the use of this incredible historic site, which is perfectly located at the heart of Gatwick’s commercial office centre in City Place.“
