About Gloucester Road Tube Station

Kensington is an area of London just to the West of Central London and located within the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.  Kensington is bordered to the north by Notting Hill, by Knightsbridge to the east, to the south by Chelsea and Earl's Court and by Hammersmith and Shepherd's Bush to the west. Kensington has 3 tube stations: High Street Kensington, Gloucester Road and South Kensington all located in Travel Zone 1.

The first recorded mention of the area was in the Domesday Book of 1086, written in Latin as "Chenesitone" which has since been interpreted as "Kenesignetun" in Anglo-Saxon (Kenesigne's land or meadows).

The area is now renowned as an upmarket residential and retail area, densely populated and unusually for London containing almost no high rise buildings. The only high rise building in the area is the Holiday Inn at Cromwell Road, a 27-storey building, the large population due to the conversion of so many of the area’s large Victoria and Georgian terraced houses into flats.

The area is well known for the many upmarket shops in and around Kensington High Street and is also home to some of London’s most famous attractions including Kensington Palace, Royal Albert Hall, Royal College of Music and several museums including the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum and many others .  The head office of Daily Mail is located in in Kensington along with the offices of The Independent series, Daily Mail, Mail on Sunday, Evening Standard and Metro.
