About Leicester Square

Leicester Square is a pedestrianised area of London’s West End, popular with tourists and located in the middle of Charing Cross Road to the East, Shaftesbury Avenue to the North, Haymarket to the West and The Strand to the South. Leicester Square is in Travel Zone 1 and there is a tube station of the same name a short distance to the east, Piccadilly Circus tube to the west and Charing Cross to the south. It is covered by the postal code WC2.

Leicester Square derives its name from Robert Sidney, 2nd Earl of Leicester, who purchased four acres in 1630 which he used to build a large mansion with private, enclosed grounds. King Charles ordered the land to be opened up to the local patrons – Leicester Field as it was then known was created, latterly to be renamed Leicester Square.

The park in the middle of Leicester Square contains a 19th Century statue of William Shakespeare surrounded by dolphins. The gates at the four corners of the park originally had one bust each, depicting Sir Isaac Newton; Sir Joshua Reynolds the first President of the Royal Academy; John Hunter, a pioneer of surgery and William Hogarth, the painter. The square was refurbished in 2010 and now only the statue of William Shakespeare remains.

Leicester Square is now better known as an entertainment centre with an abundance of cinemas close by and is regularly hosts World Premieres of the l major film’s from around the Globe. The area also has an abundance of bars, cafes and restaurants making it popular with tourists and cinema goers alike.
