About Marble Arch

Marble Arch is located at the junction of Oxford Street, Park Lane, and Edgware Road, almost directly opposite Speakers' Corner in Hyde Park. It has the postal code W1 and is located in the City of Westminster, in Travel Zone 1 and also has a Tube Station of the same name. Marble Arch Tube can be found at the Western end of Oxford Street at the junction with Park Lane to the South and Edgeware Road to the North and was opened in 30 July 1900 by the Central London Railway.

Marble Arch Tube Station was redeveloped in the 1930’s to accommodate escalators resulting in the original building being demolished that stood on the corner of Quebec Street and Oxford Street, more up to date renovations were carried out to the present station in 2010. Bond Street Tube is located a short distance away to the east along Oxford Street and the areas is well served by local buses.

The Arch itself is made of Marble from the Tuscany region of Italy and was designed in 1825 by John Nash who was rebuilding the former Buckingham House into the Palace and wanted a ceremonial entrance. Marble Arch was placed on the eastern side of the Palace and it stood here in front until 1850 when it was dismantled and reassembled a year later in its present position.

Marble Arch also stands close to the site of the Tyburn Gallows, sometimes referred to as ‘Tyburn Tree', a place of public execution from 1388 until 1793.
