The Silverstone Innovation Centre is our unique serviced office centre of the month, offering businesses the prestigious opportunity to start-up from the home of British Motor Sport.
The site where Silverstone Circuit now lies was originally used as an airfield during World War II. After the end of the war the Royal Automobile Club was searching for a location for a new racing circuit and, in 1948, employed local farmer James Wilson Brown to transform the site which was being used as farming land at that time. Within just a few months a crude racing track was created. The 3.67 mile course was, in part, made up of two hazardous WWII runways and surrounded by farming land and crops.
The first Silverstone race took place on October 2nd of the same year. Thousands of spectators turned up to watch the RAC Grand Prix in which 23 cars competed with the winner reaching an average speed of 72 mph. Following the success of this and subsequent races, the circuit was eventually transformed into a world class venue to become the home of British Motor Sport and host of the British Grand Prix.
