Making Richard Branson’s Business Advice Work for You

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Richard Branson is known for being one of the most successful business men in the world and is worth a whopping 4.8 billion US dollars. Everything he touches seems to turn to gold and he also seems to be the nicest fella, it only costs a mere ÂŁ39,000 a night to rent out Necker Island and have a chat with the guy one on one – small change really.

So, with his continual success, it makes sense that his advice would be worth listening to. However, some of his top tips do leave a little to be desired, in the fact they are a little bit too specific to his lifestyle – but they are still useful with our ‘Branson To Average Guy’ conversion.

“When I’m working, I don’t like to waste my time. When I’m on holidays, I like to waste my time a little bit. I’ve always worked from home, I’ve never worked from an office I work from a hammock.” – AskMen

When you are working, work really hard so that when you do get downtime you can truly kick back and enjoy yourself. Remote working is a really great thing and is going to be the way most people work in the future, so if you have the opportunity to work this way – go for it. Also, hammocks are really cool.

“I get up quite early in the morning – maybe 6:30. I will maybe go kitesurfing, maybe play tennis, maybe go for a swim. Its the advantage of working from home and working from Necker Island.” – AskMen

Get up early to make the most of the most productive time of the day. Getting up a few hours before work also gives you time to work out, get the metabolism going and get oxygen to the brain, and it also gives you more time to plan your day and enjoy a nutritious breakfast. Also, if you work on your own private island, life’s pretty awesome.

“I dont believe in sandwiches for lunch. I like to eat from my balcony. I’ll have good food. Having said that, I do drink far too much tea and coffee.” – AskMen

If you can, eat away from the office to give your brain a proper break while you recharge. Buy or make a nutritious, healthy lunch and sit and enjoy it distraction free if you can. Don’t just steam across to the coffee shop for a wilted greasy sandwich and extra strong coffee – it will boost you for a little while but you will really feel the slump mid afternoon. Also, sandwiches are not cool.

“If you try to achieve things that people say are impossible, it does involve taking risks. People said it was impossible to take a hot air balloon around the world, and we had great adventures proving them wrong. Fortunately, we survived it. We were the lucky pilots. A lot of pilots lose their lives trying these things.” – AskMen

If you really want to get anywhere in life, you have to take risks. You have to push yourself and believe the impossible is possible. Also, don’t try flying a hot air balloon if you’re not qualified and/ or are involved in a Branson round the world project.

“In any adventure, we try to figure out beforehand, if we hit the water, how will we survive? How will the company survive? Luckily, we have always survived, and we are here to tell the tale.” – AskMen

When you are pushing boundaries, trying new things and taking risks – try to prepare for the worst as much as possible. Taking calculated risks means you’ll already have a good idea of how likely the risk is to pay off, and you’ll also have an idea of how it might not work. Consider what could go wrong, prepare for that and then go forward and progress with full enthusiasm. Also, I think we all know luck doesn’t come into it Richard.

So there you have it, some top Branson advice converted for your convenience. As long as you remember to push the boundaries, eat good food and work from a hammock, you’ll be worth billions in no time.
