The Best Plants for an Office

Reading Time: 3 minutes

This season, interior design is all about bringing the outside in, and why not? Offices can be hot, stagnant, stuffy places with pretty nasty lighting and very little ‘freshness’ to enjoy. Apart from setting up outside with a table and chair, there’s not much you can do to bring the outside in when working in an office, apart from one thing – plants. Succulents, ferns, lovely little floral cuties – there’s a whole world of plants just dying to freshen up your office right now, but which ones will you choose?

Office Plants

Dracaena Braunii or ‘Lucky Bamboo’

They are easy to care for and can grow up to 36 inches, they also look pretty cute as well. They are meant to bring you luck or at the very least make your desk look pretty. They can be grown in soil but most often come growing in water and a sponge pad. They need lots of light but no direct sunlight and their water changing weekly.

Dracaena Marginata or ‘Dragon tree’

They recently had these on sale for 50p a piece at IKEA so first and foremost they are a great option for those with questionable ‘green fingered’ talents because they are cheap to replace. They can grow up to 8 feet tall and are easy to care for and they don’t suffer too much if you don’t care for them well – they are real tough nuts so suit offices well.

Spathiphyllum Wallisii or ‘Peace Lily’

A stunning little plant, the peace lily can grow up to 2 feet in height and is really easy to care for. They look nice, suck any nasties out of the air and flourish when given lots of bright light – look after well and they could reward you with 3 or more blooms a year.

Howea Forsteriana or ‘Kentia Palm’

These tropical beauties can sprout up to 10 feet tall and look fabulous in reception areas. They are a little more costly than other office plants but they are designed to make a visual impact, so are worth the investment. As they are a palm they do require good drainage and repotting during periods of growth.

Opuntia Microdasys or ‘Bunny Ear Cactus’

This adorably named succulent is an excellent addition to any office, requiring little maintenance in the way of a small amount of water and lots of sunlight. It can grow up to 18 inches in height and requires a little bit of ‘resting time’ in Winter (don’t we all).

Crassula Ovata – Money Plant

This plant is known for bringing luck with money and friendship and enjoys being in the sun and being watered when the soil is dry. It is easy to care for as long as you do not overwater it so it might be a case of having to make one person responsible for its care, otherwise it might get watered to death, which isn’t lucky at all.

When looking at plants for your office consider the following:

  • Your budget – some plants are naturally more expensive than others, especially if they are rare or more mature than others.
  • Your lighting – look at the lighting in your office and which plants would suit that lighting.
  • Maintenance – remember to check how much maintenance a plant needs before you buy it, especially if the plant is expensive. It may be that your office is too busy to care for a plant that needs more than the odd water every now and then. You should also make sure one person is responsible for each plant so the plants do not get over or under watered.
