View from inside the office- security

Each month we will be following 2 companies, both sharing their highs and lows and everyday business challenges, as they describe any issues or problems connected to their office any and the choices and solutions they come up with or are presented with. The companies will remain anonymous as we want an insight into their office situation and not create a branding or P.R. exercise for them. Both are SME’s with between 10-20 employees, in totally different industries where one company has decided to lease their own offices and the second is in a Serviced Office.

As we move into Autumn the holiday season is drawing to an end and we are finding people firmly back  in work mode. We are entering our busiest period in the lead up to Christmas and are happy to be back to full capacity.

My attention has recently turned to the issue of  office security. After reports of a couple of office break ins in our local area I felt the need to review what security measures and insurances we have in place.

As previously mentioned we are in a leased office and are therefore wholly responsible for the security of our building and all insurances.

I found that we have a few security cameras placed strategically around the outside of our building which we hope act as a deterrent more than anything. Inside the building we have a camera which covers the reception area and nothing further.

After reviewing what we have in place I checked to see what we actually had up and running and was shocked to find that only 2 out of the 6 cameras around the building are in use.  After chatting to members of the management team I soon discovered that no one was taking day to day responsibility for the building security, there had been someone  allocated this task when we first moved to the office but they had subsequently left and it had been assumed by everyone that it was someone else’s job.

I don’t think this is an uncommon situation but it slightly alarmed me. The issue of office security is to be discussed at our next management meeting and the responsibilities will be reallocated. However this exercise has made me look at different office options for the future.  The building security is of high importance but as in our case had fallen to the bottom of everyone’s list. In the case of serviced offices security is dealt with as part of your package and is one less thing to worry about for cost and peace of mind.

I would urge businesses to check their building security measures and insurances. Its better  to be safe than sorry.
