Each month we will be following 2 companies, both sharing their highs and lows and everyday business challenges, as they describe any issues or problems connected to their office any and the choices and solutions they come up with or are presented with.
The companies will remain anonymous as we want an insight into their office situation and not create a branding or P.R. exercise for them. Both are SMEs, in totally different industries where one company has decided to lease their own offices and the second is in a Serviced Office.

Excellent news – we had confirmation that the major client we met with recently, wants to proceed. I had all but given up hope as their response kept being delayed while they “spoke to the shareholders”, but it turned out that the delay was actually because they wanted to award us with an even bigger order than we had originally discussed. Contracts are now being drawn up and we are due to begin work next month.
Knowing we have won such a huge chunk of business makes all the worries about taking on a second office drop away. We simply would not have had the capacity or brand image if we had stayed in our original office. My main contact there – Graham –even said in his confirmation call that he had been impressed with our professionalism. He loved the ‘vibe’ in the office and had the sense that we were a forward-thinking, modern company. Who knew you could get all that from some smart office furniture!! Seriously though, it was a great boost to the company and I’m thrilled. If it really takes off we may need to grow the business even further. The serviced offices have a bigger room that will be available in 3 months. I shall have to keep my eye on it!
In other news, the room dividers have gone up. They do make a difference in terms of noise, but there are some people that are not happy with them. When you can see the room, you get to know everybody a little better. Squirrelled away into little cubicles makes some of the staff feel a bit shut off. I think the answer is probably to separate the sales team from the other teams, but that won’t go down well. I shall have to have a think… is it possible to keep everybody happy?!
One thing that did make everybody very happy was an invite to the serviced offices ‘annual summer barbecue’ in the courtyard of the office block. We had no idea they did this, and it was great fun. We had burgers, drank pimms and even danced to a local band (the guitarist works in the office above us). I was a bit worried about how the other office would feel about missing out, but the invitation was kindly extended to them as long as they could bring their own food and refreshments to add to the table. It all worked out very well. In fact one of our original team was up on stage singing with the band by the end of the evening!!
The morning after the party Roberta, the receptionist, handed over all the calls we had missed the previous afternoon. She had kindly explained that we were unavailable and taken full details of each potential client. It was a stark comparison to the other office that had forgotten to set the ‘out of office’ and so had missed some hot leads and quite possibly angered clients by not returning calls.
