The London Docklands area Canary Wharf could be getting a new next door neighbour as proposals for a £2bn development have been put forward for the North-West corner of the Isle of Dogs. Property Magazine The Estates Gazette have this week revealed Artist Designs of the new site, Wood Wharf, which have been put forward by site developers Wood Wharf Partnership. Set up in 2005 the partnership consists of Canary Wharf Group, Ballymore Properties and area freeholders British Waterways.
Following the closure of the area’s dock in the 1980s the site has been utilised by warehousing and small business units, now the developers hope to secure planning permission for a 17 acre regeneration which is reported to include 5m sq ft of office space. Emphasis of the scheme has been placed on great architecture and design with the plans incorporating a two and half acre, landscaped green park area and several greenroof areas.
Surrounded by the current recession and struggling occupancy levels in the City itself, planning a regeneration scheme of this kind may seem to be a bit of a gamble for central London developers. However with serviced office providers continuing to maintain and open new centres in the Canary Wharf area there is proof of an ongoing interest in this popular business and financial district and, following a successful public consultation last year, hope that the new Wood Wharf venture could be every bit as successful if approved.
Serviced Office provider Abbey Business Centres are the latest to launch a new centre in Canary Wharf having invested in the imposing tower block building One Canada Square. Set on the 37th floor, clients will be enjoying stunning views of the surrounding area and great natural light from this glass-fronted building. The area totals 28,000 sq ft of brand new space, currently configured in a mainly open-plan set up. Although Abbey have not given an official date the centre looks set to be open for business towards the end of this month.
