Proposals for two of London’s tallest tower developments at Blackfriars, which include a substantial amount of new Commercial Office space, are at the beginnings of a 5 week inquiry to decide whether or not the construction will be given the go ahead.
Proposals include one 170 metre tower to be located at 1 Blackfriars Road and two further towers to be built at 20 Blackfriars Road, one of them being 148 meters high.
According to Commercial Property magazine Property Week the inquiry has been launched in response to complaints over the development by several independent groups. Westminster City Council has opposed the plans, believing that the buildings will obstruct views of London. The English Heritage also believe the towers will contribute nothing to the city’s heritage and Waterloo Community Development Group express the worry that Number 1 Blackfriars would, ‘create too few jobs for local people’.
The magazine also reports that Southwark City Council, who will be the host of the towers, are supporting the development saying that the towers at 20 Blackfriars will offer, ‘high quality design, regeneration benefits, landscaping and public realm improvements’. Proposals suggest the creation of a substantial amount of Commercial Office Space at 20 Blackfriars where 277, 400 sq ft of commercial space for offices will be erected as well as a number of shops, flats and a 261 bedroom hotel.
